Second Saturday series features" "Jackie Robinson & the Bay City Lawyer who Saved His Career"
with Keith Birchler & Robert Sarow
While serving as a lieutenant in the US Army during WWII, future baseball
star and civil rights pioneer Jackie Robinson was court martialed for
insubordination following an incident in which Robinson resisted Texas Jim
Crow law and refused an order from a civilian bus driver to go to the back of
the bus. Lost to history is the fact that he likely would have been convicted
but for the excellent defense he received from a young officer and lawyer
from Bay City Michigan. While Robinson’s court martial and acquittal is
well known, the identity of his lawyer was lost to history. This is the story
of that young lawyer from Bay City and his part in making Jackie Robinson’s
future possible.
