Gary A. Frey

Gary Alan Frey passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by loved ones the morning of March 3rd after battling Glioblastoma Cancer for over two years. In fighting this disease, Gary proved to his loved ones what they already knew – he was the strongest and bravest man in their lives. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Those who knew him, knew of his kindness and big heart. Gary was full of love, random trivia knowledge, and a few bad dad jokes. Even in his final days, he was making smart remarks and witty comments.

Gary was born November 13, 1950, in Bluffton, Ohio, to the late Geneva (Amstutz) and Clarence Frey. He moved to Michigan where he began his career in the telecommunications industry. He eventually settled in Pinconning, where he met his wife, Catherine Donajkowski. They married at St. Michael’s Church in 1984. They built a beautiful life together. They raised three children, Jeffrey, Jennifer, and Justin. Gary was a Regional Operations Manager with Century Telephone for over 30 years. He was a dedicated and supportive father to his children in every aspect of their lives. He attended nearly every sporting event, band concert, cross-country race, and was involved with The Boy Scouts of America. He was the definition of an excellent father. He loved traveling, camping with his family, hunting and fishing, woodworking, making stained glass, gardening, keeping up with the latest technologies, and playing with his grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine, son, Jeffrey (Marc Virgili) of Madrid, Spain; daughter Jennifer (Daniel) Lorentzen of Clinton Township, MI; and son Justin (Renee) Frey of Ypsilanti, MI. He has two grandchildren, Evelynn and Leo, who love their Grandpa to the moon and back. He leaves many loved ones behind, including brothers, J.W. (Nancy) Frey; Robert “Denny” (Jackie) Frey; Greg (Chari) Frey; and sisters Jenny (John) McDaniel; Julie Powell; and Kathy Cervantes. He is also survived by his in-laws, who loved him dearly: Louis and Clara, Stanley and Brenda, and Louis and Brenda Donajkowski. He is predeceased by his brother Ron (Marlene) Frey; brothers-in-law George Powell and Andy Cervantes; and sister-in-law Mary Jane.

Those wishing an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a memorial to be given to the family so they may make a memorial contribution in Gary’s honor. Per Gary’s request cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home, Pinconning, MI, was in charge of arrangements.
