Maureen Lange

Maureen was born on February 5, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan to Polish parents Pauline and Stanley Staniec, and grew up in Hamtramck. After attending St. Florian Catholic grade school, she graduated from Commerce High School in 1954, the top academic girls’ school of Detroit. Maureen was the first in her family to attend college. After earning an academic scholarship, she worked multiple jobs to pay her way through University of Detroit Mercy and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy & Theology. Maureen did this while helping raise her brother Joe after their mother Pauline died when Maureen was 23 and her brother was just 13.

Maureen married her husband Richard Lange on May 5, 1962. She moved with her family to Pinconning, MI in 1975. She and her husband owned and operated the Pinconning Trail House Motel and the In Town Inn (in Standish, MI) for over 18 years. She took care of her husband for 19 years, after his traumatic brain injury and also took care of her Dad before his death in 1985. She moved north in 2001, with Richard to Indian River, MI to be close with her lifelong best friend and sister, Phyllis.

Aside from work, Maureen was a devoted Catholic, was involved in various women’s clubs, enjoyed line dancing and was an avid gardener. Most of all, she was a tireless caregiver, and enjoyed spending time with her family. Maureen lived life to the fullest, she was very active, including tubing on the Sturgeon River through age 83, and traveling to stay in Florida each winter. Maureen was a devoted wife to her husband of 42 years, and a loving mother and grandmother.

Maureen is survived by her children, Lisa (John) Shampine and Lance (Amanda Dunham) Lange; grandchildren, Zachary, John, and Ian Alexander; siblings, Phyllis Markowicz and Joe (Ellen) Staniec; and her special friend, Harold Heintz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lange, on August 4, 2004.
